What is an IP Address and How Geolocation Works

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical identifier assigned to every device connected to the internet. Think of it like a mailing address for your computer or phone — when you visit a website, send an email, or stream a video, your IP address tells the network where to send the data you requested. Every internet connection, whether from a home Wi-Fi network, mobile data, or office broadband, is assigned a public IP address by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This address is how websites and services know where to send their responses, and it reveals general information about your location and ISP.

IP geolocation is the technology that maps IP addresses to physical locations.
