Understanding IPv4 Subnetting & CIDR Architecture

An IPv4 address consists of 32 bits arranged in four 8-bit octets separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). Subnetting is the process of borrowing bits from the host portion of an IP address to create smaller, isolated networks called subnets. In modern network engineering, CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) has replaced rigid legacy address classes (Class A, B, and C) with flexible variable-length subnet masks (VLSM).

The prefix length (such as /24 or /16) designates exactly how many of the 32 bits belong to the network identifier. The remaining bits determine how many host machines (servers, computers, IoT devices, or mobile endpoints) can be connected within that broadcast domain. In standard subnets, two addresses are always reserved: the Network Address (all host bits set to 0) and the Broadcast Address (all host bits set to 1). The formula for calculating total usable hosts is 2^(32 - CIDR) - 2.

Whether you are designing a cloud Virtual Private Cloud (AWS VPC or Azure VNet), configuring corporate VLANs, preparing for Cisco CCNA examinations, or setting up a secure home lab router, calculating exact host boundaries and Cisco wildcard masks prevents routing conflicts and ensures efficient IP allocation.
