Modern internet speed tests use intelligent algorithms to give more accurate results than older single-stream methods. Here is how they work and what each metric tells you.

Internet speed tests seem simple: click a button, get three numbers. But what happens under the hood, why different speed tests return different results, and what each metric actually tells you about your real-world experience is worth understanding โ€” especially if you are troubleshooting slow performance or trying to verify you are getting the speeds your ISP is charging you for.

Why Speed Test Results Vary Between Tools

Before explaining how modern speed tests work, it helps to understand why speedtest.net, fast.com, and IPLocatorTools often return different results for the same connection.

Server selection โ€” Each service uses different servers. Your connection to one server may be faster than another depending on network routing. A result from a server in your same city is usually faster than one routed to another country.

How Modern Speed Tests Work

Phase 1: Ping Measurement

Phase 2: Download Speed Measurement

Download testing is where the methodology most significantly affects results.

Single-stream testing (older method): Open one connection, download test data, measure the throughput. Why Your Speed Test Might Show Lower Than Your Plan Speed
